New Rwanda asylum treaty deals with Supreme Court concerns, says James Cleverly
Home Secretary James Cleverly has said that a new treaty with Rwanda addresses concerns raised by the UK’s Supreme Court, which recently deemed the government’s plan to send migrants to Rwanda as unlawful due to potential human rights breaches. Cleverly emphasises Rwanda’s explicit commitment to ensuring the safety of migrants arriving in the UK.
The policy is part of the government’s strategy to discourage migrants from crossing the Channel in small boats, a key priority for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Despite being initially announced in April 2022, the Rwanda scheme has faced legal challenges, causing delays, and no asylum seekers have been sent to the country so far.
