Jonathan Majors has revealed how he prepared for his role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new major villain, Kang the Conqueror, explaining that he spent ‘hours a day’ studying the heroes he’s played opposite in order to be their perfect antagonist.
The 33-year-old actor made his MCU debut in TV series Loki, opposite Tom Hiddleston and Time Variance Agent Mobius M. Mobius (Own Wilson) in 2021.
The show focused a lot on the multiverse and the tangle of multiple timelines ahead of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania diving back into the Quantum Realm and setting up Phase Five for everyone.
That means it’s Paul Rudd’s popular turn as Scott Lang who will first be squaring up against the big bad for Marvel.
Now Kang is stepping up to the big screen to do some more, um, conquering, Majors opened up on the heaps of work he did for his preparation to become the foreboding villain.
Speaking at the press conference about the different variations (important Marvel word) he’s played so far of Kang, starting with He Who Remains, he explained to Metro.co.uk and other press: ‘The prep really comes down to who my director is, and who my hero is. Because as an antagonist, we’re following our heroes.

‘In this case, I had a few to kind of look at and break down, which is the fun part. I look at them and I figure out, okay, you can’t antagonise somebody if you don’t know who they are, if you don’t know what’s the opposite of them, if you don’t know what their hopes and dreams are. My objective is to do that – antagonise in order to get what I need to fulfil my life, my dream.’
He continued: ‘So in Loki, I’m dealing with Tom. It was great – He Who Remains and Tom. I got to watch him the whole time. This opportunity came to me in lockdown, and so I studied Tom Hiddleston for hours a day.

‘And then when that was done, I went, “Okay, Paul Rudd, you’re up.” And I studied him, and I studied him, and I studied all his hero colleagues and co-patriots.’
The Lovecraft County star then said he ‘spoke to his director’ in each case to help him ‘lean into the culture’ of the different projects and versions of Kang.

‘There’s a line that He Who Remains says, “I’m just flesh and blood.” Kang has to relate to him first as a man, as a human being. He relates to all of them as a human being. Then we can combat. Then I can get him to do what I need him to do, perhaps.’
In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Scott’s daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton), partner Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), and her parents, Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) are all back for an even larger slice of the action pie.
Ant-Man And the Wasp: Quantumania is set for release on February 17, 2023.
