The mother of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims has criticised Evan Peters’ Golden Globe win following his acclaimed performance in the Netflix drama.
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story arrived on the streaming service in September 2022, revisiting the true story of Milwaukee serial killer Dahmer, including his childhood, adult life, crimes, how he was caught, and the court case that followed.
Since its release, the 10-parter has been widely condemned for ‘retraumatising’ the families of those who lost their lives at the hands of his crimes, while viewers expressed their terror.
During Tuesday night’s Golden Globes, American Horror Story actor Evan, 35, thanked Glee creator Ryan Murphy for ‘letting me be part of your brilliant vision again’ as Dahmer became one of the most-watched limited series in Netflix’s history.
Reflecting on the backlash, he admitted the series was a ‘difficult one to make,’ but hopes some ‘good’ can come out of it.
Shirley Hughes’s son Tony Hughes, an aspiring model, was murdered by the serial killer on May 24, 1991, aged 31.

He was Dahmer’s 12th victim.
Shirley, who is portrayed by Karen Malina White in the programme, claims Evan should’ve paid tribute to the victims during his speech.
‘There’s a lot of sick people around the world,’ she told TMZ.
‘People winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going and this makes sick people thrive on the fame.’
Dahmer, who identified as gay, was convicted of brutally killing 17 victims in total, all male, between the years of 1978 and 1991.

Once in prison, Dahmer died at the age of 34 after being beaten to death by another inmate.
Amid the controversy, creator Ryan Murphy revealed they researched ‘for a very long time,’ claiming to have reached out to 20 family members and friends for their input, but heard nothing back.

‘We relied very, very heavily on our incredible group of researchers who… I don’t even know how they found a lot of this stuff. But it was just like a night-and-day effort to us trying to uncover the truth of these people.’
