Morocco stun Spain winning on penalties
Morocco stunned Spain – and the world – when they knocked Spain out of the World Cup, winning 3-0 in a penalty shootout.
Morocco now progresses to the quarter-finals.
The two teams could not be separated after 120 minutes so the goalless game went to penalties.
Spain failed to convert any of the three penalties they took – with Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saving two.
Morocco scored their penalties, with Achraf Hakimi stepping up to take the final one that would cement their victory.
Morocco benefited from having lots of fans, jubilant and supportive, in the stands.
The stadium went wild as Morocco reached the last eight for the first time. They will now face Portugal on Saturday (15:00).
Morocco vs Spain – Morocco held their own
Spain had the most possession but Morocco sat back and pugged the gaps, not letting Spain get many chances.
Morocco were playing on the counter and were able to hold the defensive line for the full 90 minutes, and then 30 minutes of extra time.
Spain had managed to notch up over 1,000 passes in the game, they even almost won it at the 123rd minute but the ball went just wide of the post.
Spain – who last won the World Cup in 2010 – ends this world cup campaign in misery, after an optimistic start when they beat Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening game.
With the amount of possession, Spain had you’d expect them to have scored, but Morocco had held firm, and the favourites to win the match – only managed to get one shot on target.
Spain boss said his side practised over 1,000 spit kicks in training in the lead-up to the match but they now need to go back to the drawing board after missing all three spot kicks they took.
Spain exited the 2018 World Cup on penalties at the last 16 stage.
