Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – after the poor reception to the campaign, it falls to the multiplayer to win over fans (Picture: Activision)
Four multiplayer maps have had to be removed from Modern Warfare 3 because players kept respawning next to their opponents.
Even before it officially launched, fans were already slamming Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for having the worst campaign mode in the entire series, thanks to the early access period.
As a result, it’s fallen to the game’s multiplayer modes to salvage its reputation. Unfortunately, following its launch this morning, developer Sledgehammer Games has had to remove multiple maps.
That’s because of problematic spawn points that are placing players in unfavourable positions whenever they die, something fans were warning about during the beta.
Various gameplay clips can be found on social media, which show players spawning in the exact same place over and over.
This has led to some players reappearing right next to their opponents, resulting in them being repeatedly gunned down. In one clip, opposing players spawn in next to each other, at the very start of the match.
According to the Call Of Duty Updates Twitter account, this issue was affecting three maps – Quarry, Rundown, and Scrapyard – in the game’s Hardpoint mode. As such they’ve been removed until Sledgehammer can work out a fix.
Sometime afterwards, a similar issue was discovered in the Karachi map from the Cutthroat mode, prompting its removal as well.
It’s not a great first impression for Modern Warfare 3. If anything, this only emboldens a recent report about the game’s rushed development, which claimed it was made in just 16 months.
Sledgehammer’s studio head Aaron Halon, however, refutes this in a statement that, while not directly referencing the report, is clearly written as a response to it.
‘Long before we wrapped up our previous game, we heard loud and clear from fans about the desire to stay and play together for longer within the same series. And that’s what we’ve delivered 0 the first true sequel in franchise history,’ writes Halon.
This lines up with Activision’s previous statement about how having back-to-back Modern Warfare sequels was always planned.

Halon continues: ‘We have worked hard to deliver on this vision which has been years in the making. Anything said to the contrary is simply not true – this is our game and we cannot wait to play it online with all of you.’
This is completely at odds with the allegations made in the Bloomberg report, which spoke, under cover of anonymity, to several members of staff that say Modern Warfare 3 began life as a DLC expansion and not a full game. Not only that, but it’s said it was originally envisioned as a small-scale spin-off and Activision decided to make it a sequel partway through development.
