The full 120 minutes of football was spectacular – and then it went to penalties. Argentina beat out France and Messi finally got crowned as the greatest.

UK weather: temperatures soar by 15 degrees in a day
Sunday was the UK’s last day of its cold snap, as temperatures have risen overnight and are expected to reach highs of 14C on Monday. The end of the cold snap will be welcomed by many after the freeze led to travel disruptions and some power cuts. But yellow rain warnings and flood alerts are in place, and the wet weather is expected to cause other disruptions and travel delays. Both nighttime and daytime temperatures are set to increase over the next couple of days – with maximum daytime temperatures across the UK ranging from 11C to 14C.

Thai navy ship sank in storm, rescuers search for missing 31 sailors
31 sailors are missing after a warship capsized and sank during a storm in the Gulf of Thailand. The Thai navy has confirmed the ship – the HTMS Sukhothai – was carrying over 100 crew members. The ship sank after water flooded its power controls on Sunday night. Rescue teams have managed to rescue 75 crew members, but 31 were still missing in the rough seas. The search and rescue teams worked through the night to find survivors, and it has continued into Monday. The Navy has said it will open an investigation into the cause of the disaster.

Canada Vaughan shooting: 5 dead in ‘horrendous’ crime
A gunman has opened fire at a block of flats in Toronto, Canada, killing at least five people. Police responded to reports of the shooting at the building in Vaughan, (19 miles) north of Toronto, at 19:20 on Sunday. The cops shot the suspect dead there. Another injured person has been taken to hospital. The individual is said to be in a serious condition. Authorities are investigating the motive and believe there could be a possible connection between the gunman and the victims.
