McLaren’s full focus is stopping Verstappen in F1 2025 title fight, says Stella

Mclaren Shifts Focus to Stopping Verstappen in Title Chase

McLaren has abandoned its ‘repercussion’ system in a strategic shift aimed at thwarting Max Verstappen’s challenge in the Formula 1 title race for 2025, team principal Andrea Stella has announced. The move comes as Verstappen gains momentum, having secured victories in three of the last four Grand Prix, narrowing the gap in the championship standings.

    Full Focus on Stopping Verstappen

Stella emphasized McLaren’s reorientation towards supporting their drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, in their fight against the Red Bull driver. With five races remaining, Piastri leads the championship with a narrow 14-point advantage over Norris and a 40-point lead over Verstappen, who has significantly cut into what was once a 104-point gap.

    Overcoming Internal Rivalry

The resurgence of Verstappen can be attributed to a series of upgrades on the RB21 alongside the internal struggles within McLaren as Piastri and Norris vie for supremacy. A controversial incident in Singapore saw Norris overtake Piastri but collide during the maneuver, an incident that left McLaren considering the need for consequences. As a result, Norris faced “minor consequences” in the following Austin race, where Piastri was given qualifying priority.

However, during the Austin sprint, both McLaren drivers collided while battling, prompting Piastri to admit responsibility for the incident. In a bid to ensure unity and clear focus moving forward, McLaren has removed the repercussions imposed on Norris.

Clean Slate for a Title Push

Ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, Piastri confirmed the removal of repercussions, highlighting that McLaren’s aim is to clinch both championships this season. Stella remarked, “We thought that the best approach moving forward was to start with a clean slate and focus in the only direction on which we want to focus – to make sure that the driver’s championship is papaya.”

With their constructors’ title already secured in Singapore, McLaren’s mission now rests firmly on stopping Verstappen’s momentum and re-establishing their dominance at the forefront of Formula 1.

    Conclusion

As the battle intensifies in the final rounds of the 2025 Formula 1 season, McLaren’s strategy aims to consolidate efforts around Piastri and Norris to end Verstappen’s winning streak and reclaim the championship title. The coming races will prove crucial in determining if their newfound approach will yield the desired results against the formidable Red Bull driver.
