Anthony Gordon is set to join Newcastle Unietd after the Magpies agreed an initial £40m fee with Everton for the winger, who Arsenal legend Martin Keown has described as a ‘spoiled child’.
Everton rejected a £45m bid from Chelsea for Gordon over the summer, but have now rejected a lower bid after a disappointing season so far from the 21-year-old.
Gordon has scored just three Premier League goals in 16 appearances, with only 12 of those appearances coming in the starting XI, despite the Toffees’ lack of options up front.
Despite his poor form, clubs have maintained interest in him and he now looks set for Newcastle and a challenge for European football rather than a relegation battle.
Keown, who made over 100 appearances for Everton, has not been impressed by the youngster’s attitude, suggesting that he has been distracted by talk of moves and should have instead been concentrating on getting the Merseyside club out of their predicament, with the Toffees languishing 19th in the table.
‘He wanted to go to Chelsea. Now there is talk of Newcastle and that’s turned his head,’ Keown told talkSPORT before the move to St James’ Park was agreed. ‘He’s got a football club where he is and he needs to concentrate on doing his best where he is.
‘These young players are so pampered because they are on a pedestal all their life. This is almost like a spoiled child’s behaviour.
‘He needs to behave himself and get back in line and help his football club to stay up.’
Gordon is likely to have played his last game for Everton as the Toffees are already out of the FA Cup and not in action this weekend.
He is set to be a Newcastle player by the time they return to Premier League action on 4 February at home to West Ham.
