A man will appear in court later today charged with the murder of a 70-year-old who was killed in an apparently random attack on a street in Hartlepool.

Counter-terrorism police were called to a hostel currently housing migrants in the County Durham town on Sunday morning following reports of a stabbing.

One man who had been attacked inside the building was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, and officers later found a second man seriously injured half a mile away.

Terrence Carney had just used a nearby ATM when he was attacked, with police saying early inquiries suggested he was simply a ‘passer-by’. He died at the scene.

Ahmed Alid, from Hartlepool, was charged with murder and attempted murder at around 10pm yesterday.

The 44-year-old is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London later this morning.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said last night: ‘This evening’s charges follow a thorough investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East and Cleveland Police.

‘We are satisfied that this was an isolated incident and are not seeking anyone else in connection with this matter.’

He added: ‘We are grateful for the support and understanding of the local community during this investigation, which has caused understandable concern among local people.

‘We will continue to work closely with Cleveland Police colleagues to reassure those affected and keep them informed.’

Two bunches of flowers were left outside a property on Wharton Terrace, which remained cordoned off by police and forensics officers yesterday.

The second man, who has not been named, was still in hospital on Monday evening.

Deputy Chief Constable Victoria Fuller, from Cleveland Police, said: ‘I am extremely proud of the bravery of the attending officers, that enabled the incident to be dealt with swiftly.

‘We would also like to add our thanks to the local community for their support during this investigation.

‘Our thoughts remain with the family of Mr Carney, and the second man involved in Sunday’s incident.’
