A 66-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted murder after a stabbing at a busy market in London.

The attack happened on the morning of Remembrance Sunday on East Street, Walworth, and three people were seriously assaulted.

One of those people, 77-year-old Hilkiah McLeggan from Southwark, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A market stall holder who comforted the victim told The Sun: ‘There was blood everywhere.

‘The victim shouted, “I am gone. It’s the end of my life” and collapsed and died.’

The other two were taken to hospital with serious injuries and they’re both still receiving treatment, with one of them in a critical condition.

A man was arrested at the scene and was pictured being led away by police in handcuffs.

Fruit stall holder Nihad Osmam, 27, said there was ‘chaos’ in the market, with stalls abandoned.

And a shop worker who witnessed the fatal attack said the knifeman was tackled to the ground by brave market traders shortly after the third person was targeted.

Musse Ali, 66 and of no fixed abode, has now been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder.

He’s set to appear at Croydon magistrates court later today.

The Metropolitan Police have been forced to address social media posts suggesting that the attack was a terrorist incident, saying they believe ‘this is not the case’ and asking the public not to speculate.

Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh said: ‘This was a horrific incident where a man had lost his life and two other people received serious injuries.

‘The incident has understandably caused concern amongst the local community.

‘There will be an increased policing presence in the Walworth area as we work alongside our partners to provide reassurance to local people and small businesses operating in East Street.

‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank brave members of the public who assisted police at the scene.’
