Luis Enrique sacked after Spain knocked out of World Cup
Spanish football manager Luis Enrique has left his role after Spain were dramatically knocked out of the World Cup at the last 16 round.
Spain lost to Morocco on penalties – with the team failing to score a single penalty.
Enrique took charge of the national team in 2018 and guided Spain to the semi-finals of the 2020 Euros.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said a “new project” should start but did not put a time frame on when a new boss would be announced.
“We would like to thank Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff,” the RFEF said in a statement.
Spain World Cup performance
Spain’s World Cup campaign started strong – with a 7-0 thrashing of Costa Ricam but their 1-1 draw with Germany saw them accused of being “boring”.
Spain lost 2-1 Japan, and then were held to a goalless draw by Morocco – they then lost the penalty shootout.
