Luca Brecel admits he only has one way to beat Mark Selby in World Championship final

Luca Brecel admits he has ‘no chance’ of competing with Mark Selby in drawn out, safety battles, and must attack him to win the World Championship title.

Brecel and Selby meet over Sunday and Monday in the Crucible showpiece after the Belgian downed Si Jiahui and the Englishman beat Mark Allen on Saturday.

It is a clash of styles in the final, with the Belgian Bullet displaying his usual all-out-attack approach, while the Jester from Leicester is famous for his abilities in the safety and tactical departments, while he is also a prolific scorer when on song.

The Belgian is well aware that he will have to deal with some safety exchanges against Selby, but he says it would be foolish to really try and take him on in that style of match for long periods.

‘I will just play my stuff,’ Brecel told a press conference of facing either Selby or Allen after beating Si. ‘If I try to play their game then I have no chance, they’re so clever in the safety department. If I want to win I just need to take the chances that I get, it’s as simple as that.

‘I have beaten them before but this is different, this is the final of the Worlds. They have more experience than me, but if I play well then I think it’s going to be difficult for them to beat me, but if I don’t play my best then it’s going to be a tough game.

‘It doesn’t really matter. I’m just looking forward to it and for me it’s so special to be involved in the final of the World Championship.

‘It’s unknown territory so it’s going to be difficult, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. Selby has won it four times before, he’s a Crucible king. Whatever happens it will be a very, very difficult game for me. The other guy is going to be the favourite.’

Brecel is not getting ahead of himself, admitting that he is the underdog in the final, but did allow himself to briefly daydream about the prospect of being world champion.

‘If that happens it would be crazy for snooker in Belgium and Europe,’ he said. ‘And just for myself, it would be something I would never have dreamt of this year.

‘Obviously I expected to win it once in my life, but this year I had no preparation, never won a game here and now I’m in the final, it’s some story.’
