Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak to be announced as next PM today
The UK will today learn who will succeed Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative party and therefore the country’s prime minister.
The winner is expected to be announced at 12:30 BST before they officially take up office on Tuesday.
The winner, either Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak, will travel with Boris Johnson to Scotland where the Queen will appoint the winner. The ceremony will take place at Balmoral Castle in Scotland over Buckingham Palace in a break with tradition due to the Queen’s mobility issues.
The next prime minister inherits a flagging economy as inflation is at a 40-year high.
Liz Truss is still tipped to be the favourite and win the contest. Whilst rival Rishi Sunak has indicated that he believes he has lost the race and suggests his job “now is just to support a Conservative government.”
