Liz Truss news – live: Warning of ‘national uprising’ on benefits ahead of PM speech
The Independent says Former prime minister Gordon Brown has warned Liz Truss of a “national uprising” if she fails to uprate benefits in line with inflation, as a fresh Cabinet rift threatened to open up over the matter ahead of her make-or-break Conservative Party conference speech.
On the morning of Ms Truss’s address, former minister Michael Gove was forced to deny leading a “coup” against her, after highly unusual remarks by home secretary Suella Braverman to that effect the previous day.
The comments were among a series of extraordinary ministerial clashes during a Tory conference marked by Ms Truss’s dramatic U-turn on her totemic tax policy, Labour’s surging poll lead, and general chaos in the Conservative ranks.
