Joao Felix will decide on his club future after the World Cup after Atletico Madrid’s CEO confirmed he is likely to leave the club in January.
The 23-year-old forward remains Atletico’s record signing, having parted with €120m to sign him from Benfica in 2019.
But having struggled to fill his immense potential in the Spanish capital, a move now appears to be on the cards in the New Year with the relationship between Felix and Diego Simeone strained.
Manchester United, who were interested in his services while he was still at Benfica, are said to have the strongest interest in the Portugal international, who starred in Tuesday’s 6-1 victory over Switzerland.
With Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain also keen, Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Martin has confirmed the player wishes to leave the Wanda Metropolitano.
‘He is the biggest bet the club has made,’ Gil Marin told TVE.
‘I think he has the highest level in the world but for reasons that are not worth going into now, the relationship between the coach and him is not good, nor is his motivation.

‘The reasonable thing is to think that he leaves, although I would love him to continue, but, this is not the player’s idea.’
Felix has enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign in Qatar, placing himself firmly in the shop window with the January transfer window now looming large.
The 23-year-old is represented by Jorge Mendes, Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-time agent and with United seeking a replacement for the veteran striker following his release, reports in Spain suggest Felix has already been offered to ten Hag’s side.
For now, however, Felix insists his sole focus is on the World Cup and will leave his future in Mendes’ hands for the time being.
“I’m completely focused on the World Cup,’ Felix said.
‘My agent doesn’t tell me anything about what’s going to happen, nor does he want to. I need to be focused on the now to play a great tournament.’
Portugal will take on Switzerland in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday with the winner of that contest to meet France or England.
