January 6 committee seeks four criminal charges for Trump
A US inquiry into the 2021 riot at the Capitol has said that former president Donald Trump should face criminal charges, including insurrection.
The committee voted unanimously for the justice department to prosecute Mr Trump.
The House of Representatives select committee, which is led by Democrats, spent around 18 months investigating the January 6 2021 attack.
The attack saw roughly 2,000 Trump supporters storm Congress, interrupting Joe Biden’s certification as president.
The panel also released a new clip of former Trump aide Hope Hicks on her warning to him about his legacy.
The former president, who denies any wrongdoing, as released a statement slamming the panel as a “kangeroo court.”
On Monday, the committee recommended that former president Trump face four charges:
- Inciting, assisting, aiding or comforting an insurrection
- Obstruction of an official proceeding
- Conspiracy to defraud the United States
- Conspiracy to make a false statement
