2023 is now in full swing, after Christmas festivities and New Year celebrations.
It can be a lovely time of year – especially if you’ve indulged over the holidays, have a sunny January getaway to look forward to, or have yet to break any of your New Year’s resolutions.
Perhaps you fancy spending the day giving your house a declutter – or heading out to find a bargain in the January sales.
Whatever the case, it’s useful to know whether today is an official bank holiday or not.
Let’s find out.
Is today a bank holiday?
Yes! Today is Monday, January 2 – and it’s the New Year’s Day bank holiday.

This is the case in all corners of the UK: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
January 2 is not always a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, though.
For 2023, it is simply a substitute day to make up for the fact that the actual bank holiday (January 1, aka New Year’s Day) took place yesterday – on a Sunday, a day many workers will already have off.
However, Scotland does typically get January 2 as its own bank holiday – on top of New Year’s Day.
This year, Scots will get January 2 and Tuesday, January 3 off – as substitutes for their typical January 1 and January 2 bank hols.

Word of warning: as it’s a bank holiday, you might want to check shop opening times if you’re heading out.
Supermarkets, DIY shops, cafés and other stores may open later than usual or close earlier than they typically do, so do keep that in mind if you fancy a trip to the shops.
