    Iran hits record 229 deaths from coronavirus in 24 hours

    Arab News says Iran reported a record 229 deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday as it struggled to contain a virulent second wave of the coronavirus.

    The virus has hit Iran harder than any country in the Middle East, but authorities were forced to ease lockdown measures in mid-April, as the economy collapsed in the face of US sanctions and the pandemic fallout

    Trump concedes pandemic to ‘get worse before it gets better’

    BBC News says President Donald Trump has warned the US pandemic may “get worse before it gets better”, as he revived his virus briefings with a more scripted tone.

    Mr Trump also asked all Americans to wear face coverings, saying “they’ll have an effect” and show “patriotism”.

    The president, who was not wearing a mask at the briefing, has previously disparaged them as unsanitary.

    His aides have reportedly pressed him to adopt a more measured approach as virus caseloads spike across the US.

    Mike Pompeo attacks WHO in a private meeting during UK visit

    The Guardian says The US secretary of state Mike Pompeo launched an extraordinary attack on the World Health Organization during a private meeting in the UK, accusing it of being in the pocket of China and responsible for “dead Britons” who passed away during the pandemic.

    Pompeo told those present that he believed the WHO was “political not a science-based organisation” and accused its current director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of being too close to Beijing.

    EU rescue deal: ‘The  most important moment in the life of our Europe,” says Macron

    France24 says a historic rescue plan for economies left shattered by the coronavirus epidemic was hailed by French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday as “the most important moment in the life of our Europe since the creation of the euro”.

    The deal is a special victory for Macron, who came to office in 2017 committed to strengthening the European Union but has struggled to deliver.

    Coronavirus: Florida outpacing the rest of the US in deaths

    Aljazeera News says Florida’s skyrocketing coronavirus death rate is now higher than any other US state, edging out Texas, which has about 25 per cent more people.

    Florida recorded another 134 deaths on Tuesday, bringing its daily average for the past week to 115, topping the 112 deaths a day Texas reported during that time, Associated Press statistics show. A month ago, Florida was averaging 33 coronavirus deaths a day.

     Indonesia reports 1,655 new Covid-19 cases, total number nears 90,000

    CNN says Indonesia has reported 1,655 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases across the country to 89,869, according to the country’s health ministry.

    The country has now recorded 4,320 coronavirus-related deaths, the ministry said on Tuesday.

    As of Monday, most confirmed cases were in Jakarta, East Java, South Sulawesi, Central Java, West Java and South Kalimantan, according to a situation report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

    Sky News says Amber Heard has denied having affairs during her relationship with Johnny Depp, as details of texts with Elon Musk and CCTV of her and actor James Franco were shown at the High Court.

    She also answered further questions about her allegations of domestic abuse against Depp, telling the court she was his “punching bag” and that: “He was twice my size and beat me up for years.”
