Schools across the UK have opted to stay shut for the second consecutive day because of the weather.
Others have delayed their start times so pupils and teachers can get to classrooms safely during daylight hours.
A yellow alert for snow and ice is still in place for swathes of the North East, North Yorkshire and south-west Scotland until midday on Thursday.
Meanwhile, an ice warning covers much of the south east, including London and Brighton, this morning.
More snow is expected to fall in northern parts of the country tonight, with ‘as much as 15 to 20 centimetres’ gathering on higher ground.
The Met Office has warned about longer travel times, along with the potential for injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.
Parents should be able to find out whether their children’s schools are closed on their individual websites and from local councils.

Today is the second snow day in a row for British kids, with yesterday seeing thousands of classrooms closed after the coldest night of the year so far.
Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said northern Scotland could record even colder temperatures tonight.
He said: ‘In terms of temperature, we could see another very cold night, especially in parts of Scotland where we’ve got that lying snow.
‘We saw minus 15°C on Monday night. We could see similar or potentially even colder tonight under clear skies with that snowfall lying in some places.
‘So a very cold night there but also broadly very cold across the whole of the UK, with widespread freezing conditions.’

National Highways said it had up to 25 gritters treating the M25 at any one time on Sunday and overnight into Monday.
They spread 960 tonnes of salt and more than 18,000 litres of anti-freeze.
The country has been thrown into even more travel chaos today, because of a combination of the weather and rail strikes.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) are pressing ahead with two 48-hour strikes at Network Rail and 14 train companies from Tuesday and Friday.
Driving examiners and Rural Payments Agency workers also begin a series of strikes by civil servants across England, Scotland and Wales on Tuesday.
