Hugh Jackman has become emotional while speaking about losing his father while filming The Son.
The Wolverine star, 54, plays a lawyer learning how to navigate his teenage son’s depression in director Florian Zeller’s follow up project to 2020’s The Father.
During filming for the project, his father also passed away.
In September last year Christopher John Jackman died ‘peacefully’ on Australia’s Father’s Day.
He was believed to have been 84-years-old.
Speaking about the loss, Hugh has said it was an emotionally charged time on set already with the content of the film, which only increased while he battled the emotions of losing his father.
‘It was a very emotional time, and I am so grateful to every member of the cast and crew.
‘When you are going through something like that, and you are doing a film that is so intense you just can’t do it alone and you have to lean on people,’ he said while appearing on The Graham Norton Show on Friday.

However, it was at this point that Hugh became emotional and started crying as he spoke about losing his father.
‘I had people there and uh, I did, and I am very grateful for it,’ he continued.
Comforting Hugh, Graham said that he should be ‘very proud’ of the film.
‘You are so good in it. It is such a powerful film,’ he said.
Talking about starring in the film focus on fatherhood, Hugh said he hoped it would also ‘start conversations around mental health’.
‘It is beautifully written, beautifully produced, and will, I think touch everyone.’

He also said the role ‘changed me as a parent’.
‘One beautiful line in the script is “Love isn’t always enough,” which is one of the most difficult things for a parent to hear,’ he said.
‘I realised it is okay to say to my own children, “I don’t know” and to be open and vulnerable.
‘I used to think they wanted surety and strength from me, but I now share with them things I wouldn’t have before.’
He added: Hopefully I’m not boring dad doing it and that they appreciate it.’

In December Hugh spoke about how he decided not to take a break from the movie to grieve his dad’s death.
In the middle of shooting the drama, Hugh got the news that his father had died, but made the decision to continue working instead of taking leave to go home.
‘My father actually never missed a day of work in his life,’ he told the BBC.

‘I did imagine what my father would say and he would say, “Go to work”’.
However, he added he was a ‘hot mess’ during this time, but explained how the employment of mental health professionals that had been hired for this project were hugely helpful.
The Graham Norton Show airs on Fridays and is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
