Go on, we dare you.
The best thing about makeup is how playful it is – despite all the trends and tips out there, the truth this, there really are no rules.
Gigi Hadid’s recent grey lip was an ode to this. Makeup is anything you want it to be and no colours are off-limits.
Grey seems like a weird colour to wear on the lips because it’s not done often and isn’t anywhere near close to a ‘natural’ shade. That doesn’t mean it won’t look good.
In actuality, it looks great on Gigi and this makeup moment might have you curious to try it yourself.
As the lips are the statement here, Gigi has gone for really simple makeup elsewhere – this is one way to make the shade work.

Eyes are lined and coated with black mascara, and there’s just the softest touch of shadow.
That along with a skin tonal blush means the makeup overall doesn’t appear ‘overdone’ – instead, it’s ultimate cool-girl makeup, with one statement feature.
See it as an alternative to a bold red lip.
Keeping the hair swept back off the face adds a severity to the overall beauty moment too, though wearing hair down would soften this if you’re nervous about appearing ‘harsh’.

Gigi’s shade of grey has a blue/purple tone to it as well, which makes it less jarring than a blackened-grey.
The trick is to avoid a pale grey, as that can wash out your complexion – rather, you want to go bold with the look (or go home).
We’ve found some perfect grey lippies to try – and one softer option for those who want to tip-toe their way into grey.
What to shop for grey lipstick
Huntress
A bold look (Picture: Maybelline)
To try the tone without breaking the bank, head to Maybelline. Their SuperStay Matte Ink range has a grey shade called ‘Huntress’, that once on, won’t budge from lips until washed off.
You can shop the £9.99 lipstick here.
Visionary
Keep is softer (Picture: Maybelline)
Or, for a slightly more accessible jump into the colour, try the shade ‘Visionary’ from the same line. It has a touch of purple in the grey tones and is therefore that bit more wearable.
Shop the shade here.
You can see our Lifestyle Reporter, Tanyel, wearing Visionary here – and it actually doesn’t look so out of the ordinary.

Scandalous

Another High Street option is NYX Lip Lingerie in Scandalous.
For £10.99, this browned-grey will serve as a way of saying ‘don’t mess with me’ with the swipe of a lipstick.
Even better, on the NYX website, you can use the virtual ‘try on’ feature to see if you rock a grey.
