England and France are set to do battle in a titanic World Cup 2022 quarter-final this evening.
The two footballing rivals meet in Qatar with a place in the semi-finals up for grabs, with both teams looking to add to the World Cup trophies already tucked away safely in their trophy cabinets.
But exactly how many times have France won the greatest prize in the game and when was the last time they tasted success in the tournament?
Here is everything you need to know.
How many World Cups have France won?
France have won the World Cup twice throughout the history of the men’s national team.
Their first victory came in 1998 when the World Cup was held on home soil.

Les Bleus started the tournament as one of the favourites and they eased through the group stage with three victories over Denmark, South Africa and Saudi Arabia.
The round of 16 clash with Paraguay was goalless after 90 minutes, and it was only in the 114th minute during extra-time that centre back Laurent Blanc broke the deadlock to send France through via the Golden Goal.
The quarter-final against Italy went all the way to penalties after a 0-0 draw after extra-time, with Blanc once again the hero by scoring the winning penalty.
Croatia awaited in the semi-finals, with France coming back from a goal down courtesy of two strikes from Lillian Thuram in the 47th and 70th minutes.
The final was a mouthwatering showdown with Brazil, but two goals from the mesmeric Zinedine Zidane and one from Emmanuel Petit fired the hosts to the title at the Stade de France.
France’s captain for that tournament, Didier Deschamps, was then the manager when they won their second World Cup in 2018.

They opened their Russia campaign with victories over Australia and Peru and a draw with Denmark to top Group C.
In the round of 16 encounter with Argentina, a second half brace from Kylian Mbappe saw the French recover from falling behind 2-1 in the 48th minute to record a 4-2 victory.
The quarter-final game against Uruguay was a more straightforward affair with goals from Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann helping them to a 2-0 victory.

A tense semi-final with Belgium followed next, and Samuel Umtiti’s strike six minutes after the half-time interval fired them into the final.
The Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow was the venue for their second World Cup triumph, with goals from Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Mbappe and a Mario Mandzukic own goal helping to write their names in the history books once again.
France have also made the World Cup final on one other occasion – the 2006 defeat to Italy on penalties in Berlin.
