Thestrals are hard to find in Hogwarts Legacy, although they’re not quite as elusive as in the Harry Potter books.
Hogwarts Legacy makes it relatively easy for you to spot thestrals – those creepy horse/dragon things with the bat wings – in contrast to the Harry Potter movies and books, where only those who have witnessed death up close can see them.
You will encounter a variety of fantastic beasts on your travels outside of Hogwarts castle, but locating rare creatures can be a little tricky, given the size of the open world.
Still, thestrals are not as rare as the phoenix (there’s only one!) but they’re not as common as kneazles or nifflers either. So, here’s where to find thestral dens and how to capture one.
You will need to capture two thestrals in the process of completing the Foal of the Dead quest. In all of Hogwarts Legacy, there are only two thestral dens on the map, and they’re quite far away from one another.
The first thestral den is located north of the East North Ford Bog floo flame at the northern part of the Hogsmeade Valley region.
You’ll find the thestrals hanging around the middle of the swamp, which holds quite a few other secrets as well.

The other thestral den is located south of the Coastal Mine floo flame east of Marunweem Lake, but it’s likely you wouldn’t have reached this location until later in the game. If that’s the case, it’s best to look for the thestral den in Hogsmeade Valley first.
Unlike most of the creatures in Hogwarts Legacy, thestrals will try to fly away from you if they are spooked by your sudden presence.
In this case, it’s better to approach these creatures after casting the Disillusionment charm, just like you would do when trying to unlock the special eye chests.

Once you manage to get close enough to a thestral, you may find the Arresto Momentum or Levioso spells are quite useful to prevent them from escaping. Next, you should activate your nab-sack to kickstart the process of capturing a beast.
You can then go back to your Room of Requirement and set your thestrals free in your vivarium, where you can feed, pet, and breed them.
To multiply your thestrals make sure you have at least two of the opposite gender and place them in the breeding pen. Soon enough, you’ll see a baby thestral roaming around.
In exchange for taking care of them, you can collect the resource of thestral hair – which was used as a wand core for the strongest wand to ever exist, the Elder Wand.
