Heartstopper star Kit Connor has voiced his thoughts about the lack of bisexual representation on screen, calling it ‘shockingly low’.
The 18-year-old actor, who plays Nick Nelson in the teen Netflix drama, was speaking about his portrayal of his character on a Critic’s Choice Award panel alongside his co-star Joe Locke.
He shared: ‘The bisexual community is a community that has really a shockingly low representation, especially male bisexual characters.
‘It is shocking because a huge amount of the LGBTQIA+ community is made up of bisexual people.
‘It’s a huge community but we really don’t get much representation.

Kit added that it was ‘a real pleasure to be able to portray that journey and those experiences’ through his character Nick.
‘Playing those kind of moments, it felt like the main arc of the character.’
He continued: ‘It’s not just so much of working out whether or not you are a boy attracted to another boy.

‘It’s also, you know, discovering whether or not everything he previously thought about his sexuality is suddenly invalid, or whether or not it’s something he still wants to acknowledge.
‘I think that’s something that isn’t seen very often.’
This comes after Kit claimed he was forced to come out as bisexual earlier this month.

The actor wrote on Twitter: ‘back for a minute. i’m bi. congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. i think some of you missed the point of the show. bye.’ (sic)
It’s uncertain what prompted his tweet, but he was later showered in support by fans, with showrunner Alcie Oseman among those rallying around.

‘I truly don’t understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes,’ she penned.
‘I hope all those people are embarrassed as F*CK. Kit you are amazing 💖.’
Heartstopper is available to watch on Netflix.
