One of Britain’s most prominent extremists has been charged with directing a terrorist organisation.
It is one of three terror offences that the Metropolitan Police has brought against Anjem Choudary.
The 56-year-old was arrested last Monday after officers raided his home in Ilford, east London.
He was charged on Sunday with membership of a proscribed group, directing it and addressing meetings to encourage support.

Another man, Khaled Hussein, a Canadian national, has also been charged with membership of a proscribed organisation under the Terrorism Act 2000.
The 28-year-old landed at Heathrow on a flight from Canada seven hours after Choudary’s arrest.
The pair were held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and remanded in custody.
At the time, the Met revealed that searches of three east London addresses were ongoing.
Both have now been remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later today.
