US election 2024: Harris leads Trump in key state Pennsylvania – poll
Kamala Harris holds a narrow lead over Donald Trump in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania, according to new USA TODAY/Suffolk University polls conducted after last week’s debate. With just 50 days until Election Day, Harris leads Trump 49% to 46% in Pennsylvania, though the results fall within the poll’s margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.
Pennsylvania, with its 19 electoral votes, is considered one of the most crucial swing states in the 2024 election. Winning Pennsylvania is seen as essential for both candidates in their path to securing the necessary 270 electoral votes.
The poll highlights a significant gender gap that is working in Harris’ favour. She leads female voters in Pennsylvania 56% to 39%, while Trump holds a smaller lead among male voters at 53% to 41%. Harris also edges out Trump among independent voters, leading 43% to 38%.
In terms of personal popularity, 49% of likely Pennsylvania voters view Harris favourably, compared to 43% for Trump. Meanwhile, 54% of voters hold an unfavourable opinion of Trump, higher than Harris’ 47%.
These polls come on the heels of the first and only debate between Harris and Trump, where many observers, including some Republicans, felt Harris outperformed Trump. Following the debate, Trump announced he would not participate in any future debates against Harris.
Harris is also leading in two of Pennsylvania’s key bellwether counties, Erie and Northampton, both of which have a track record of predicting the state’s overall outcome, according to additional USA TODAY/Suffolk University polls.
