Nothing makes money quite like GTA (pic: Rockstar Games)
Take-Two Interactive is launching ‘several groundbreaking titles’ starting from April next year and it sounds like GTA 6 is amongst them.
One of the reasons people are so excited about the PlayStation Showcase next week is that because it’s been so long since Sony has made any major announcements, they must surely have a backlog of several games waiting to be revealed.
Rockstar Games owner Take-Two Interactive is in a similar position, even if you don’t consider Grand Theft Auto, and they’ve told investors that their next fiscal year, which runs from April 2024 to March 2025, is going to be the start of a ‘new era.’
‘Fiscal 2025 is a highly anticipated year for our company,’ says Take-Two. ‘For the last several years, we have been preparing our business to release an incredibly robust pipeline of projects that we believe will take our company to even greater levels of success.’
‘In fiscal 2025, we expect to enter this new era by launching several groundbreaking titles that we believe will set new standards in our industry and enable us to achieve over $8 billion in net bookings [revenues, essentially] and over $1 billion in adjusted unrestricted operating cash flow [profit, basically].
‘We expect to sustain this momentum by delivering even higher levels of operating results in fiscal 2026 and beyond.’
Nowhere is Grand Theft Auto, or any other game, mentioned by name but since Take-Two don’t have any other franchises that would guarantee that sort of money it seems very obvious that’s what they’re getting at.
A 2024 or 2025 launch has been the prevailing rumour for a while now and if that is the plan then some kind of reveal – even if it doesn’t show much – this year does seem likely.
Rockstar Games usually prefer to do things themselves, so it would be a surprise if they made the announcement at Xbox or PlayStation’s summer events, or Summer Game Fest, but that’s not entirely outside the realms of possibility.
Take-Two does mention multiple games coming out in the same period and that could include previously announced, but never seen, titles such as Civilization 7 and Mafia 4.
It’s also well past time that Take-Two unveiled their promised new Bioshock game, although clearly none of these titles are going to be making the sort of money implied by their statement.
There is a boring option though and that’s that they could be referring, at least in part, to something new from mobile developer Zynga, which is becoming an increasingly large part of the company’s business.
Even, so their predictions for the fiscal 2025 period is almost $3 billion more than they’ve ever made before and to talk about that much money, this far out and with that degree of certainty, seems like it could only mean one thing…
