A disabled great-grandmother’s home got so cold after builders drilled holes in her windows her Sky TV remote froze over.

Carole Roberts, 67, had to thaw out its icy buttons at her Worcester property, which she says feels ‘like a fridge’ because heat leaks through gaps in the double-glazing.

Her problems started when condensation built up between the panes of glass in her living room.

It meant Carole, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, couldn’t see out of them, particularly when she was cooking.

She complained to Platform Housing during the summer and they sent contractors round to try and solve the issue.

The workmen drilled ten holes in the outer layer of glass and resealed them with a liquid gel, which successfully cleared the condensation.

Unfortunately, most of the plugs have now fallen out, leaving her exposed to the elements for the cold winter months.

The retired chip shop worker said: ‘I’ve never seen this before. The contractor said it was a new thing.

‘But who drills holes in windows? It’s crazy. I told my local councillor what happened and she looked at me like I’d fallen off another planet.’

She added: ‘The living room is like a fridge, I would like some new windows.

‘I don’t want the holes plugged because the plugs are going to come back out again. It is a waste of energy. I have the heating on all the time.’

Councillor Jill Desayrah said the windows must have been substandard in the first place, adding: ‘We need a proper sealed double-glazed unit without any holes. It’s not too much to ask for.’

Marion Duffy, chief operations officer at Platform Housing, apologised and promised to send a surveyor out to repair the windows.
