Google reveals UK’s most popular searches of 2021 including Matt Hancock and Squid Game
2021 UK google searches: Matt Hancock & celebrities dominate UK’s most popular searches
The UK’s most searched for trends and terms over 2021 have been released and include everything from political scandals, celebrities and of course Covid.
The UK list included footballer Christian Eriksen and movie Dune.
Matt Cooke, head of Google News Lab, said: “It’s no surprise that 2021 has revealed some interesting insights into the zeitgeist of the nation.
“During a year of unpredictability, we have turned to sport, entertainment, gardening, recipes and UK-based travel to get us through some of the most frustrating and difficult times.
“We have seen searches for prominent women dominate the top of our lists, as well as huge rises in second-hand and sustainability queries over 2021.
“Year in Search always provides a fascinating insight into what the nation is thinking, learning and discovering – about themselves and others.”
Here are the most searched terms for 2021 according to Google.
Famous people
Most of 2021’s top trending searches were related to individuals at the centre of the year’s biggest news stories.
Footballer Christian Eriksen takes the top spot after he collapsed on the pitch and had a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 football match.
Matt Hancock is in second. The former health secretary was caught on CCTV kissing his married aide Gina Coladango and the footage and stories of the affair were leaked to the press.
Tennis sensation Emma Raducanu was the third-most Googled person in the UK after she surprisingly won the US Open.
Piers Morgan is in fourth place. Likely due to his constant heavy criticism of actual celebrities.
Prince Philip, Sarah Everard, Alec Baldwin, Sean Lock and Alec Baldwin also made the top 10.
TV Shows
Of course, the hit Netflix show Squid Game dominated the search trends for 2021.
Netflix said the Korean show is their “biggest TV show ever” and revealed it had been watched by 142 million households around the world.
It was watched by 111 million users in its first 28 days on the platform.
Bridgerton was watched by 82 million households in its first month, therefore securing a place on the list.
Hit show Line Of Duty had the world searching “Who is H?” as it drops into fourth most-Googled. The final episode saw 128 million viewers tune in making it the most-watched episode of a drama in 20 years – according to the BBC.
“Who left Strictly?” and “when does Love Island finish?” according to the most searched for “who” questions.
Films
The most-searched trend for films was sci-fi movie Dune – starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya.
Marvel had three of its movies – Black Widow, Eternals and Shang-Chi on the list. They take second, third and seventh most-searched-for movies respectively.
The highly anticipated James Bond film No Time To Die was the fourth most-Googled film.
Music
The most Googled lyric search was Lady Gaga’s Poker face.
Adele returned to the music scene this year and her hit single Easy On Me came in second. Niel Diamond’s Sweet Caroline came in third after it became an unofficial anthem for England’s Euro 2020 campaign.
