Google top trending US searches this year sum up 2020 perfectly: Kobe Bryant, Naya Rivera, Chadwick Boseman, Covid and Unemployment
It’s been a strange year. A year of uncertainty, economic struggle, lockdowns and death. And the top google searches in the US reflect it.
The United States: Top Google trends 2020
The top US trending topics this year are not a surprise. “Coronavirus”, “election results” and “Zoom” led the way. However, these aren’t the top searches or most-searched topics. But instead are “searches that had a high spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2020 as compared to 2019,” Google said.
Lockdown meant people had to find out how to use Zoom and the video conferencing company took centre stage.
Naya Rivera death, Chadwick Boseman death
2020’s year-in-review content is depressing; amongst the top trending searches were Kobe Bryant, Naya Rivera, and Chadwick Boseman – all of whom tragically died this year.
In news, “stimulus checks,” (the US government’s distribution of payments that didn’t go smoothly); “Unemployment” (as millions in the US lost their jobs due to the pandemic lockdowns); “Australia fires”; “Super Tuesday”; and “Hurricane Laura.” The search “Murder Hornet” also made the list and perhaps the idea of murderous hornets are a perfect mascot for this hellish year.
The individuals who top google trend searched included Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Kanye West, Tom Brady, Tom Hanks and Kim Jong Un.
Black Panther cast, Tiger King cast
The cast of Netflix’s Tiger King became overnight stars when the TV hit over lockdown. Following Chadwick Boseman’s death, Black Panther became one of the US’ trending searches.
In the movies category, Parasite, Black Panther, Sonic the Hedgehog, Little Women and Quin: Birds of Prey topped google’s trending searches.
Top trending TV shows were, of course, dominated by Netflix who threw out some great hits over lockdown. Tiger King, Queen’s Gambit, Cobra Kai, Outer Banks and Ozark reigned supreme.
For games, Among US topped the 2020 list, along with Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Valorant, The Last of Us 2, and, of course, Animal Crossing.
In an uncertain year, there’s no surprise that “during coronavirus” was a trending search category; a way for people to find out information such as whether it was ok to go to the dentist, buying a house, find a job, date, or get an Uber.
