President Trump has been accused of racism following his tweets, directed at four congresswomen of colour, suggesting they “go back” to the countries they originally came from.
Of the four women, three were born in the US and the fourth moved to the US as a child.
The Republican party have not yet commented on the tweets despite the wave of criticism. He is lowering the standards of acceptability and is giving rise to racial hatred within the US and globally. If the US president can be so frankly racist, then so can everyone else.
The four women have accused the President of racism and they have received the support from members of the Democratic party.
What did he say?
The sitting President did not directly name the three women, but by using the context, the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi- made a clear link. Trump added Ms Pelosi would happily organise for them to leave the country.
Last week Pelosi clashed with the four women – but has jumped to their defence following the tweets.
Trump tweeted “So interesting to see ‘progressive’ Democratic congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful nation on earth, how our government is to be run.”
“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done.”
“These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements.”
The backlash
Pelosi tweeted “When @realDonaldTrump tells four American congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to ‘Make America Great Again’ has always been about making America white again. Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power.”
Congresswomen Ms Tlaib said: “Want a response to a lawless and complete failure of a president. He is the crisis. His dangerous ideology is the crisis. He needs to be impeached”
Fellow congresswomen, Ms Cortez: ‘On top of not accepting an America that elected you, you cannot accept that we don’t fear you either’ She tweeted to President Trump.
Ms Omar tweeted: “Mr President, as members of congress, the only country we swear an oath to is the United States. Which is why we are fighting to protect it from the worst, most corrupt and inept president we have ever seen.”
She added: “You are stoking white nationalism because you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda.”
But Mr Trump hit back at accusations that his tweets were racist, saying: “So sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion.
Democratic candidates Bernie Saunders, Elizabeth Warren and Beto O’Rourke have condemned Trump’s tweets as racist. Earlier today British Prime Minister also condemned President Trump’s tweets
