Good Morning Britain’s Laura Tobin has told viewers the reason she presented her segments from Egypt at the COP27 summit is so that she can be there to tell vital stories about the impact of climate change.
The weather presenter had hosted her segments for Thursday’s show, including the weather report, from Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, where she has been attending meetings at the COP27 event to tackle the impact of global warming.
She met with a young activist from Kenya to hear about the effect climate change has had on her country, but used the interview to also address why she had flown out to Egypt to do the interview face-to-face and how they were off-setting the carbon footprint of the flights.
Laura told viewers: ‘I just want to say Elizabeth flew here, as have the majority of people here, journalists like myself, to be able to tell her story, stories that wouldn’t normally be told.
‘It’s so important for all of us to hear what’s happening where she is and why it’s so important to all of us.
‘The impact on the environment is far outweighed by the flights which, by the way, are flights in economy and we offset our flights.

‘But we are able to come to the meetings and to the discussions to tell the stories and it’s hoped that these stories will help to shape the final text here at COP to make sure we can limit our warming.’
Despite Laura’s explanation that she was in Egypt to attend the summit, viewers took to Twitter to voice their disappointment that she was discussing the impact of climate change after having taken a flight, which has a significant carbon footprint.
They tweeted: ‘stop global warming stop sending the weather woman to Egypt on a plane’ and ‘Laura Tobin has just explained why she has flown to Egypt to tell us all about how flying is causing climate change. Thanks, Laura.’
Others added: ‘@GMB sending there weather team @Lauratobin1 on a plane to Egypt #COP27 to appear on tv for 1 minute to lecture us about climate change. Something not right there!’ and ‘Can you please explain how a woman who lectures us on the state of the climate then flies to Egypt to give a UK weather report from a conference about the climate? It’s complete hypocrisy and should’ve been done in the studio. You all know it!!!’
Earlier in the week, Laura had explained how they were off-setting the carbon used to fly to Egypt, explaining: ‘We use off-setting in areas of the world that we actually use resources. For example, there will be a lot of off-setting for I’m A Celeb in Australia. And the exact same thing is happening for us here in Egypt.’
She added: ‘Last year I went to COP26 that voted on cutting emissions, net zero targets, limiting earths warmings.
‘It was so important for me to go there, be on the ground talk to scientists to see what was happening, so that’s why I’ve come to Egypt this year to COP27. It’s the implementation COP to make those targets a reality and they’re passing a baton from one end of the scale to the other.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
