You can always rely on McDonald’s, and this particular Los Angeles based branch has been serving customers for 70 years.

The world’s oldest surviving McDonald’s, in Downey, Los Angeles County, first opened its doors to hungry customers in 1953.

Now, fans come from far and wide to order at the veteran restaurant where they can step back in time, and take in the original 1950s decor.

But there’s another reason why this particular McDonald’s is so popular.

This branch is the only place in the continental United States where a deep fried apple pie is still on the menu.

The sugary treat was actually discontinued by Maccies back in 1992 due to health concerns – swapping to a baked version.

It caused national outcry, which saw petitions to bring back the fried version, and fans driving far and wide to try and find franchises still serving those last few remaining pies.

But, the fried apple pie still lives on in Downey.

And, once armed with said apple pie, customers can also visit the museum within the restaurant, which shows off McDonald’s memorabilia, including original menus.

This branch of everyone’s favourite fast food chain was the third to be franchised by founders and brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald.

It still has the two original 30ft golden arches, which flank the building, and signs which read ‘Your Kind of Place’ and ‘Hamburgers: We Have Sold 500 million.’

But visitors are actually lucky that the building remains in tact at all.

Due to low sales and a lack of drive up or indoor seating, the restaurant was closed in 1994 with plans to demolish it.

However, it was listed as an endangered historic place, and gathered public support to save it. It reopened two years later.
