Gemma Owen and Luca Bish’s relationship had been ‘rocky for weeks’ before they announced their split on Wednesday.
The pair, who came runners-up on Love Island, broke up three months after going official.
The daughter of footballing legend Michael Owen met the fishmonger on this year’s edition of Love Island, and since leaving the villa, their relationship seemed to be going from strength to strength, having met each other’s families, gone on holiday together and even done the all-important food shop.
However, three months after Luca asked Gemma to be his girlfriend, the pair have now split.
But it doesn’t seem to have been a sudden decision.
A source told Metro.co.uk: ‘Gemma and Luca’s relationship had been rocky for weeks before the breakup.’
The insider insisted their relationship was real, but their split ‘wasn’t a shock.’

They continued: ‘Cracks were forming in the last two weeks, since before their trip to Dubai. While on holiday, they brushed over it but when they got back nothing had changed.’
Yesterday, Gemma wrote: ‘To all my followers. I wanted to let you know that Luca and I are no longer in a relationship.
‘It wasn’t an easy decision but this ultimately is what is best for us both right now.
‘Many of you have been on this journey with us from the very beginning and I want to thank you for your continued support as we start new chapters. Love always. Gem x.’

Shortly afterwards, Luca posted a statement on his Instagram, saying he ‘would have liked some time to process [the split] privately.’
His message read: ‘Switched my phone back on after taking some time out to clear my head after an emotional afternoon to thousands of messages and news articles about my breakup.
‘I would have liked some time to process this privately but as you all now know sadly Gemma and I made the mutual decision earlier today to go our separate ways.
‘We have been on such a journey together and have made some amazing memories which I will treasure.

‘I can’t thank everyone enough for their support for us as a couple during and after Love Island.
‘We will remain good friends and I wish nothing but the best for her.’
Their split comes days after Luca told Metro.co.uk at the TV Choice Awards, when asked how their relationship was going: ‘It’s going better and better and better, honestly, in the villa towards the end everyone could see, you’re just ready to get out, and that timing and when we got out was the best thing that happened to us.
‘So yeah, loving life.’

Elsewhere, he made a dig at Paige Thorne who recently claimed that there was a ‘fake relationship’ among this cohort of islanders.
Paige was coupled up with returning bombshell Adam Collard, with the pair splitting shortly after leaving the villa.
Alongside Luca and Gemma, Dami Hope and Indiyah Polack, Tasha Ghouri and Andrew Le Page, and Davide Sanclimenti and Ekin-Su Culculoglu made it to the final.

During a recent podcast, Paige mentioned that there were only three couples left in relationships… before adding: ‘But really there’s only two – but that’s a secret I’ll never tell.’
It seems Paige got her maths wrong, as by our count there were four couples still together at the time – but nonetheless, she still voiced her belief that one of the relationships isn’t genuine in her eyes.
Reflecting on the comments to Metro.co.uk on Monday, Luca said: ‘I don’t really care to be honest,’ he replied curtly.

‘Listen – people, when you come out the villa, I think a lot of them take podcast after podcast, show after show, or radio after radio, and the best thing they can do is talk or make a story.’
He continued, stating: ‘I dunno what Paige was doing or who it was about, but that’s up to her and say what you want to say,’ while also laughing.
Metro.co.uk has approached Gemma and Luca’s reps for comment.
Love Island is available to watch on the ITV Hub.
