G7: New sanctions will make sure Russia pays a price, Sunak says
In a recent interview with the BBC, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced his intention to impose more sanctions on Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Sunak emphasised the need for Russia to face consequences for its actions and expressed hope that other countries would follow suit.
The new sanctions will target Russian exports, including diamond imports valid at £3.2 billion in 2021, as well as copper, aluminium, and nickel imports.
The PM expressed the UK must remain committed to standing up for democracy, freedom and the rule of law and believes the other countries at the G7 summit would join in implementing the sanctions – making them more effective. The UK government also plans to target 86 individuals and companies linked to Russian President Putin, particularly those undermining the impact of existing sanctions.
