Ford launches hands-free driving on UK motorways
The UK government has approved Ford’s BlueCruise technology, which allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel while driving on certain motorways. The system can control steering, acceleration and braking, but requires a camera to monitor the driver’s eyes so they stay focused on the road.
Initially, the technology will only be available for 2023 models of the electric Mustang Mach-E SUV, and will be offered on a subscription basis. The first 90 days of the subscription are included with the purchase of the £50,830 car, after which drivers will have to pay a monthly fee.
The system can also keep a safe distance from other vehicles and can bring the car to a complete stop in traffic jams. Transport Minister Jesse Norman praised the technology, saying that it would make driving smoother and easier, while also reducing the potential for driver error and increasing road safety.
The UK is the first European country to approve BlueCruise technology.
