Tributes have been paid to a ‘top bloke’ who died after being hit by an ambulance while riding a scooter.
Shaun Jackson, 31, died in the crash at around 10.25pm on the A628 Barnsley Road, on Friday night.
One of his friends, Dean Cusworth, wrote online: ‘Top bloke. Sadly took too early.
Mr Jackson was a keen scooter enthusiast and Elm Valley Scooter Club posted: ‘Sending out our condolences to Shaun Jackson to his family and friends who has tragically died in a road traffic accident yesterday.
‘Shaun was one of the Honda plonk gang who did the Humber Bridge ride with us. Sadly missed. RIP young man.’
There were more than 240 comments from friends on South Yorkshire Police’s Facebook page.
A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust said: ‘We can confirm that an ambulance on its way to an emergency was involved in a road traffic collision with a scooter at around 10.25pm on Friday night on the A628 Barnsley Road, Hoylandswaine.
‘The male scooter rider sustained serious injuries and was conveyed to hospital, but very sadly died on Saturday.
‘First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family at this very difficult time.
‘We are working with the police to help with their investigation into the cause of the collision.’
South Yorkshire Police said yesterday ‘We received a call from a member of the public and another report from Yorkshire Ambulance Service about a reported collision between an ambulance that was responding to an emergency call and a scooter.
‘The scooter rider – a man aged in his 30s – was transported to hospital, but later sadly died from his injuries. The driver of the ambulance is assisting officers with enquiries.
‘We request that the privacy of the victim’s family is respected at this difficult time. We are again appealing for anyone with information to come forward.’
