Mrs Brown’s Boys returned to television screens to kick off the new year, but fans haven’t reacted quite as Brendan O’Carroll – Agnes Brown – might have hoped.
Airing on BBC One on Sunday, the comedy half hour slot was slated by viewers online after what they deemed to be a ‘painful’ watch.
The special episode, titled Mammy’s Hair Loom, was one of four to be shown in 2023 and saw the once loved fictional character navigate life in Finglas for the second time in a couple of days.
‘Suspicion surrounds Cathy’s creepy boyfriend, Boris. Buster and Dermot are convinced he is a vampire and hatch a plan to save Cathy, which leaves her mortified,’ the synopsis of the 30-minute programme read.
Reacting to the fixture online, viewers of the show were left disappointed and called for the concept to be cancelled.
One viewer wrote: ‘Don’t understand why people like #mrsbrownsboys it’s not funny. There is nothing funny about a bloke in a dress unless it’s Rupals Drag Race Please someone explain why our licence fee is spent on rubbish like Mrs BB [sic]’.

‘Not even 24 hours in to 2023 & already Mrs Brown’s Boys is on TV!!! That’s this year ruined! Thanks a lot BBC [sic],’ this user despaired at the show being one of the first things they watched in 2023.
However, not all comments were negative reviews with some of the show’s audience applauding it for its comedic efforts.

The 2023 special came after an episode aired on Christmas Day entitled Shining Mammy.
Taking over the BBC after EastEnders, Brendan’s comedy skit set a precedent for its delayed return to screens following the pandemic.
He revealed the network were ‘adamant’ to produce more episodes in the new year and that the studios had already been booked out for filming.
