Fable looks like it’s finally ready to bloom (Picture: Microsoft)
The first hint that the Xbox Games Showcase is going to be a good one suggests that the Fable reboot will be there.
There are high expectations for the Xbox showcase in June. Given fans’ frustration with the underwhelming PlayStation showcase, this is Microsoft’s best opportunity to curry favour with its audience and be crowned the ‘winner’ of this not-E3 period.
Starfield is the only title guaranteed to make an appearance, but there are still plenty of big games that are long overdue for an update.
One such title is the Fable reboot announced back in 2020 and after three years of silence, it looks as if Microsoft is ready to pull back the curtain.
This isn’t based on fan speculation or any insider knowledge; Microsoft itself has unsubtly hinted at something Fable related for the showcase in a recent tweet.
It consists of a short video of a glitter trail leading to a computer displaying the Xbox showcase logo, advising everyone to tune in when it airs.
At first, the Fable associations seem like a stretch, but the accompanying music sounds like it was lifted straight from the Fable games. At the very least, it sounds far too similar for it to be an accident – and it certainly isn’t Halo or Gears Of War.
Plus, the glitter trail could be referencing the sparkling breadcrumb trail used in Fable to guide you to your next objective.
It’s certainly less ambiguous than a recent Xbox tweet that had some people thinking Psychonauts 3 is in the works, which seems very unlikely at this stage. Plus, the Fable tease comes from the main Xbox account and not the Australian one, so it’s clearly meant to be a proper tease.
As for whether the new Fable will announce a release date, that’s hard to say. It was suggested back in March that the game was still ‘miles away,’ but evidence was later discovered of it entering the final stages of testing, meaning it could launch, if not this year, then perhaps 2024.
Despite those rumours there’s been very little leaked information on exactly what the game is like. However, one suggestion is that it bares comparison to CD Projekt’s The Witcher games, although it’s unclear whether this is in relation to the gameplay or the overall tone.
As a reminder, the showcase is scheduled for 6pm BST on June 11 and should run for two hours, with the final 30 minutes focused on Starfield.
