Liverpool star Fabio Carvalho has explained why he thinks Jurgen Klopp’s side have not hit the same heights this term as opposed to previous seasons.
The Reds, along with Manchester City, have dominated English football in recent seasons but have largely struggled so far in the 2022-23 campaign.
With the domestic season on pause for the ongoing World Cup in Qatar, Liverpool are down in sixth in the Premier League after playing 14 games.
It is a total contrast from 2021-22 where Liverpool were two games away from achieving an unprecedented quadruple, finishing as runners-up in the Premier League and Champions League but winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Klopp’s side will be looking to turn their season around when the Premier League season resumes on December 26 as they travel to face Aston Villa.
They are currently out in Dubai and lost 3-1 to French club Lyon in a friendly on Sunday, with Carvalho scoring the only goal for Liverpool.
Carvalho, speaking after the game, suggested that the reason the Reds have been struggling so far this term is due to their poor pressing.
‘We have been looking at videos from last season and obviously it has helped,’ he told liverpoolfc.com.
‘We want to get back to pressing how the team pressed last year, which was very useful in games and we created a lot of chances from it.
‘We haven’t quite been at the level pressing-wise this year and it’s something we’ve been working on and will keep working on. Hopefully we’ll be back to our best.
‘Obviously the [World Cup] break helped to recuperate and recover but we’re straight back into it and that’s something we want to be – we don’t want to coast into it, we want to go straight back in.
‘We have got important games coming up, the [Carabao] Cup game [against Manchester City on December 22] and then the game on Boxing Day.
‘We’re looking to work hard in training and hopefully we can get the wins in the next few games.’
