Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has reportedly put the club up for sale and wants at least £500m – after he sacked Frank Lampard on Monday in what has been a chaotic period for the Merseyside club.
They are currently second bottom in the Premier League and sacked Chelsea legend Lampard as manager on Monday after a 10-game winless run.
Everton could now be set for an even bigger change, with The Guardian reporting that British-Iranian billionaire wants to sell the Merseyside club following fierce criticism of Moshiri and his fellow board members by Toffees fans in recent weeks.
It is believed that Moshiri wants to recoup the funds he has invested in Everton’s new stadium – which is being built at Bramley-Moore Dock – with Deloitte instructed to handle the sale amid interest from a number of potential buyers.
Moshiri has spent around £700m on players since he first become involved with Everton in February 2016 and has recouped just over £400m.
News of a potential sale is just the latest controversial news coming out of struggling Everton – who Jamie Carragher labelled as ‘the worst-run club in the country’ on Monday.
On Tuesday, it emerged that star players Anthony Gordon and Amadou Onana skipped training – with speculation that the duo are looking to force their way out of the club before the January transfer window closes.
Newcastle United hope to finalise a deal for Gordon in the ‘next few days‘ and are confident they have seen off competition from Chelsea for the attacker.
It was also revealed on Tuesday that Tottenham have hijacked Everton’s deal for Arnaut Danjuma at the eleventh hour – despite the Villarreal winger having undergone a medical with the Toffees.
Meanwhile, Everton’s top candidate to replace Lampard as manager – former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa – has reportedly rejected the Toffees.
Ex-Southampton head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl has also been linked with the job.
