Erik ten Hag has warned Manchester United’s hierarchy that investment is needed this summer or they will see the club fall behind.
United ended their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win against Fulham to secured a third-placed finish behind Arsenal and champions Manchester City.
Ten Hag has already guided United to victory in the Carabao Cup final this season, while he could finish with another trophy as his side face Manchester City in the FA Cup final next Saturday.
United have already identified Tottenham striker Harry Kane as one of their top targets for the summer window, with Ten Hag desperate to sign at least one new forward before the start of next season.
And following United’s 2-1 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford, Ten Hag took the opportunity to remind the club that they failed to make ‘huge investments’ in the January window.

‘The club knows if you want to play top four, compete for trophies in this tough league, then you have to invest, otherwise you don’t have a chance because other clubs will do,’ Ten Hag said.
‘We’ve seen it in the winter: all the clubs around us made huge investments, we didn’t, but still we made it, so I’m proud of my team.
‘We are in the right direction, but we are not where we have to be. There’s potential in this team and in individual players. We showed during the season we made progress, that’s a compliment to the players and the coaches. We worked really hard but we have to make an investment.’

Ten Hag also insists United are capable of ruining City’s hopes of securing the treble by winning the FA Cup final next weekend.
‘I think you have always a chance in football,’ said the United manager.
‘History shows we beat them in January. Man United, the last couple of years, beat City many times. These players know when they play at their levels they can compete. It’s obvious.
‘We play at this moment the best team, but still there is a chance and we have to go for the chance. We have to give everything and after the game we can’t have excuses for ourselves.’
