    England’s Death toll revised down by more than 5,000

    The Guardian says the coronavirus death toll in England is to be revised down by more than 5,000 following concerns that over one in 10 fatalities should not have been included in the official figure.

    The government announced a new UK-wide standard for how it records the official toll on Wednesday after it came to light that thousands of people in England who may have recovered from the virus before they died were still counted in the headline number.

    England’s Covid app gets green light for trial

    BBC News says England’s revamped coronavirus contact-tracing app is set to begin public trials on Thursday.

    The software will be based on Apple and Google’s privacy-centric method of one smartphone detecting another.

    Engineers are still trying to reduce how often the Bluetooth-based tech wrongly flags people as being within 2m (6.6ft) of each other.

    France sees most new daily Covid cases since May

    France24 says more than 2,500 new coronavirus cases were registered in France in 24 hours in the sharpest increase since May, government data showed on Wednesday, as officials said indicators were “clearly worsening”.

    Of 600,000 tests over the past week, more than 11,600 were positive, the health ministry’s DGS public health division said.

    Chile cautiously lifts  lockdown lid on capital’s centre

    Aljazeera says Chile will lift one of the world’s longest quarantines on Monday, moving the capital Santiago’s central business district and adjoining Central Station to a “transitional” stage under a “Step by Step” reopening.

    “This is a very important announcement for us and one that gives us great satisfaction,” Health Minister Enrique Paris told a news conference in Santiago on Wednesday.

    Jordan to close border with Syria after spike in Covid-19 cases

    Arab News says Jordan will close its land trade border crossing with Syria for a week after a spike in COVID-19 cases coming from its northern neighbour, officials said on Wednesday.

    They said the interior minister’s decision to close the Jaber crossing would come into effect on Thursday morning.

    US records nearly 56,000 new Covid-19 cases  

    CNN says another 55,910 coronavirus cases were recorded in the United States on Wednesday, bringing the country’s total number of confirmed infections to at least 5,197,118, according to Johns Hopkins University’s tally.

    In addition, Johns Hopkins reported 1,499 new US fatalities from Covid-19. The country’s death toll for the epidemic is now at least 166,026.
