Energy firms can force fit prepayment meters again
Ofgem, the energy regulator, has announced new rules that require energy suppliers to give struggling customers more time to clear their debts before forcibly switching them to a prepayment metre.
Under the updated code of conduct, customers over the age of 85 will be protected from forced instalments, and those with severe illnesses will be exempt from forced switching. The rules were introduced in response to an undercover investigation by The Times, which revealed that agents for British Gas were breaking into the homes of vulnerable customers. However, campaigners have argued that the new rules do not go far enough and that vulnerable people could still face forced installations.
The rules are currently voluntary, but suppliers will need to demonstrate that they are adhering to the updated code. The charity Citizens Advice has called for the rules to be made mandatory.
