John Lydon has opened up about the emotional story behind his Eurovision bid song, after he revealed it was dedicated to his wife Nora, amid her ongoing struggle with Alzheimer’s.
The former Sex Pistols star has stunned fans with the news he’s competing to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.
He later went on to admit that he has never actually watched Eurovision, and finds the beloved competition series ‘disgusting’.
Nonetheless, Lydon and his band Public Image PiL, which formed in 1978, have entered the song Hawaii, which Lydon said is a ‘love letter’ to his wife of nearly 50 years, Nora.
Talking about the emotional song, Lydon recalled the lyrics ‘remember me, I remember you.’

He explained: ‘We spent a magnificent holiday in Hawaii after a tour once and it was just the greatest week of our lives.
‘Now her memories are fading, I wanted to bring something like that back to her. I get broke up even thinking about it.’
He continued to The Sun: ‘It is a song about the dissipation of a human being that I dearly love, in front of my very eyes.’

Hawaii is one of six songs competing for a place in the Eurovision final, which will be held in Liverpool in May.
Lydon will be joined by his punk bandmates Lu Edmonds, Scott Firth and Bruce Smith.
The 66-year-old previously spoke about his feelings about Eurovision, joining Cormac Ó hEadhra on RTE’s Radio 1.

Quizzed on how he plans to shake Eurovision up, Lydon shrugged: ‘I’ve no idea. Apparently, I have to do karaoke over a backing track.’
Despite his previously disregarding the event, Lydon did express gratitude at being invited to compete to represent Ireland.
‘What a fantastic opportunity these people have given me,’ he enthused.
