It looks like Amit could be trouble (Picture: ITV)
A recent arrival in Emmerdale caused a bit of a stir when Amit Sharma (Anil Goutam) appeared in the village – much to the shock of his sons Suni (Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana) and Jai (Chris Bisson).
Jai has known that Amit is his dad for some time now. After he found some adoption papers and found out that Rishi (Bhasker Patel) – the man who’d brought him up – wasn’t his dad after all, it wasn’t long before Rishi was forced to admit that Jai’s biological father was Rishi’s brother Amit.
Amit, who normally lives in India, turned up in the Dales not long after Jai had told Suni that he was his brother and not his cousin as they’d both grown up believing. So Suni had a lot of questions for his father.

It wasn’t long before Amit revealed the circumstances around Jai’s conception, explaining that he had a brief relationship with Jai’s mother Georgia (Lin Blakley) when he was already with his wife. His marriage had been one of convenience and in the early days he didn’t have a bond with his wife and turned to Georgia.
As well as this, there are more secrets to come out in this relationship which actor Anil Goutam told us makes his character complex and interesting – not least of all his involvement in Rishi’s death!

‘To me, it allows an insight into Amit, which, when you first meet him, you wouldn’t guess is this person. There is a darker side, as we’ve said, and it’s always nice for an actor to explore a darkness. But, if it was purely written like that, I don’t think it would be much fun, because it would purely be a caricature. It’s not written like that; it’s written as a complex person.’
In upcoming episodes this secret is the backdrop to a tense situation when Caleb (William Ash), Nicky (Lewis Cope), Suni and Amit all have dinner together. Caleb and Amit size each other up, while Nicky and Suni – who are in a relationship – hope that things won’t get two awkward.

Anil told us that Amit has no problem with his son being gay. ‘He’s comfortable with it,’ he said. ‘He may give the impression that he’s not because of the person who is comfortable with it, but he is comfortable with it.’
But it’s not long before Amit is asking awkward questions, and most specifically he wants to know what went on between Nicky and Gabby (Rosie Bentham).

This, of course, is a tricky topic for Caleb and Nicky as Nicky’s whole relationship with Gabby was part of Caleb’s plan to take revenge on Kim Tate (Claire King) and he didn’t have any genuinely romantic feelings for her at all. In the end he was unable to keep up the pretence and told her he was gay on what was supposed to be their wedding day.
It’s not surprising that Caleb and Nicky are soon making their excuses and heading home, leaving Suni feeling angry with his father.
Is Amit going to make trouble for Caleb and Nicky? Or is there something else going on?
