It’s always a bold and risky claim for a producer to claim their new storyline is one that no soap has ever done before – but Emmerdale boss Jane Hudson is sticking her neck out there and going for it!
A brand new plot in 2023 will centre on Cathy Hope, as the village teens come into focus in a number of storylines.
And Jane has declared that Cathy’s storyline is going to be ‘challenging’, which could also pose some new material for her dad Bob (Tony Audenshaw).
,There’s a lot of youngsters that have storylines too,’ she told Metro.co.uk. ‘You get to an age with the younger cast, you suddenly realise they are growing up!
‘They go off screen for a few weeks and then reappear a foot taller and their voice is deeper!
Rosie Bentham, who plays Gabby, we kept her at about 15 for three years! She eventually went “you do know my character is 18?”.
As the teens become young adults, big drama follows (Picture: ITV)
‘There is a big storyline for Cathy, Bob’s daughter, that’s really emotional too – it’s her first big storyline and it’s a challenging one and I think it’s one a lot of parents will connect with. It’s one I haven’t seen a soap do before either.’
And it’s not just Cathy and Gabby who will be in their fair share of the drama, as other big stories unfold for the up and coming generations.
‘Amelia has had her baby and Noah is being a father figure,’ Jane continued. ‘Samson is going to be more devious than usual in terms of looking after himself, he’ll cause more arguments with his father.

‘April is navigating her world with her dad as his recovery continues and we also have a story for Arthur.’
The adults aren’t being neglected, though – and Jane promised a particularly turbulent start to 2023 for the Dingles.
‘It’s explosive for the Dingles. Cain is at the heart of what’s happening, Paddy and Chas and Charity and Mack too.
‘The Dingles are really kicking off 2023 with a bang, it’s all going on for them.’
