Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu has revealed that a savage line was cut from the Emily In Paris pilot, for a very good reason.
It’s safe to say that the 59-year-old totally stole the hearts of viewers all over the world with her portrayal as the iconic, sassy and downright fashionable Sylvie Grateau, marketing boss of Emily Cooper (Lily Collins).
It is on her to begrudgingly show the US-native the ropes in the French capital, beside fellow colleagues Julien (Samuel Arnold) and Luc (Bruno Gouery).
Ahead of season three landing on Netflix on December 21, Philippine appeared for a screening of the first episode at New York’s 92NY on Wednesday night, and a talk on her relationship with the character, and what the new series has in store.
Discussing how the program came to be, she recalled reading the script for the pilot and admitted that one particular comment was scrapped from the end product.
Reflecting on the script, she told host Reshma Gopaldas: ‘There’s a line that they cut, but I loved it.

‘Where I offer Emily a cigarette and she says, “No, I’m not smoking. Smoking can kill you.” And Sylvie answers, “Better dead than fat”.
‘That is obviously so politically incorrect that they cut it. But I just loved Sylvie because of that, because of the political incorrectness.’
It’s safe to say that fans have had a tumultuous relationship with Emily In Paris since it debuted in 2020, and many mocked Darren Star’s series at the beginning.
French critics were initially angered over the way the city was portrayed, branding it ‘stereotypical and rude’.

However, this has definitely changed over time – and excitement is reaching fever pitch ahead of series three dropping next week.
Speaking of the change in perception, Philippine continued: ‘I think it’s because Darren writes a fairytale that has nothing to do with reality, yet there’s truth to it in the sense that what the characters go through is real. But there’s no reality in the settings, the costumes…
‘So, especially in France, people were so offended, it was crazy. I had to tell them, you guys don’t have any sense of humor, so they hated me even more.

‘They didn’t realize that Darren was also making fun of the Americans through Emily in a way that was so obvious to me. I guess the French were offended because they didn’t see Paris in the way that Darren – through Emily’s eyes – was seeing it.
‘But now, the music has changed. They really love it.’
