Elon Musk to co-lead Trump’s new ‘government efficiency’ body

Billionaire Elon Musk has been tapped by Donald Trump to co-lead a new body aimed at overhauling government operations. The body dubbed the Department of Government Efficiency (or “Doge” for short, a nod to the cryptocurrency Musk famously supports), aims to streamline bureaucracy and cut federal spending. Trump described the organisation as an external advisory body working alongside the White House and the Office of Management and Budget.

Musk, joined by entrepreneur and Trump supporter Vivek Ramaswamy, has been tasked with slashing red tape and identifying areas for cost reduction, with a deadline of July 4, 2026. Musk has long advocated for trimming government spending and believes up to $2 trillion could be saved. In a statement on his platform, X (formerly Twitter), Musk proposed creating a public “leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending” of taxpayer money.

Details about how Doge will function remain unclear, as it appears to be outside the typical structure of federal departments. Critics and observers are watching closely to see how the initiative will affect government operations, particularly given Musk’s past support for significant federal job cuts.
