Elon Musk says Tesla to come to India ‘as soon as possible’
Tesla boss Elon Musk has said he will take his electric carmaker company to India “as soon as humanly possible”. His statement came after a meeting with India’s PM Narendra Modi, who is currently on a state visit to the US.
The Indian government extended an invitation to Musk to explore investment opportunities in electric mobility and the commercial space sector.
The meeting between PM Modi and billionaire Musk took place shortly after Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey accused India of threatening to shut down the platform due to non-compliance with content removal requests – allegations that the Indian government deny.
In response to the situation, Musk – Twitter’s new owner – said that the social media platform is obliged to follow the rules of local governments or else face being shut down. He emphasised his commitment to free speech within the bounds of the law.
Musk expressed his admiration for Modi, and noted the potential of India, saying the country had more “promise” than any other large country in the world.
“He [Mr Modi] really cares about India because he’s pushing us to make significant investments in India, which is something we intend to do. We are just trying to figure out the right timing,” Musk told reporters. “I am confident that Tesla will be in India and will do so as soon as humanly possible.”
